Step Therapy

This is a special procedure in Part D Prescription Drug Plans that must be followed by you and your doctor before you are allowed to use certain drugs. It is necessary to try a less expensive but similar drug first to see if it works. You can only use a more expensive prescribed drug if you and your physician can prove that the lower-cost drug was ineffective at treating your condition.

The step therapy procedure proved that the lower-cost drug was just as effective for treating the patient’s condition as the more popular yet expensive brand drug.
